Clinical Approach

approach

Understanding and cultivating each person’s whole health starts with presence, connection, and non-judgment in the therapeutic relationship and continues with a thorough assessment of history, values and goals, and present-day barriers to building a more fulfilling life. We view this work as “evolution on purpose” taking into account the historical, neurological, cognitive, biological, and psychological bases of behavior.

What is CBT?

The term cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) identifies a family of therapies that aim to alleviate and prevent human suffering. The CBTs have extensive scientific support. The term, however, is often misunderstood as referring to changing thoughts in order to change feelings. This is an outdated and narrow description. Evidence-Based Therapy or Process-Based Therapy is a more current and accurate way to describe our approach.

We work primarily from the Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) model and also integrate Exposure Therapy, mindfulness training, Motivational Interviewing, Behavioral Activation for depression, DBT skills, and Functional Analytic Psychotherapy into the moment-to-moment therapy process depending on each person’s individual needs.
